Guest Contribution on “Fokus Verantwortung”

October 31st, 2008 by Andreas

Robert Lecker, an old friend of mine and also fellow student invited me to contribute a guest article on his blog ‘Fokus Verantwortung’. He asked me to write down some thoughts about open innovation and corporate responsibility. Read here what I was thinking about (sorry, only in German).

Crowd sourced fabric

October 31st, 2008 by Hannes

Bon Bon Kakku could become for fabrics what Threadless is for T-Shirts. The platform was launched recently, so I’m very courious to see how the community will pick it up the site. Besides the idea and way of communication, I really like the fresh and unusual webdesign.

Config-Order-Eat - pralimio.de

October 29th, 2008 by Andreas

After shoes, skateboards and jewelry (among others), a new configurator was introduced to the market: pralimio.de. They also deal with physical products. But I doubt those ones won’t last a long time once received by you…

.

On pralimio.de you equip your personal box of chocolates. The detailed information pages (voting and recommendations included) about every chocolate guarantee a set you will really like.

I love chocolates, but taking some out of a box has always been like walking through a flavor minefield for me. Sometimes you are lucky, sometimes you… Now it seems the times, where every second bite turns my face into a snoot, are over ;)

Photo shooting

October 27th, 2008 by Hannes

We had a photo session in the stylish Rondo building with Karin Lernbeiß in her studio. Actually we can’t tell you what it’s all about until our new website’s gonna be launched, but here’s some kind of preview. You might think it’s a shot out of “Fear and Laughing in Las Vegas” , but the mask wasn’t part of the actual shooting. It’s just a “toy” in Karin’s studio ;-)

We are very happy to announce: a new EARTH family member was born yesterday in a cabbage patch!

Monday Blues

October 8th, 2008 by Stephen

At Fluid Forms we never have problems getting up in the morning; however machines are often not as reliable. In this video you can see Hannes coaxing a Selective Laser Sinter machine (3D-Printer) into getting up on Monday morning. For the anthropologists amongst you, the video also contains fine examples of the south east Austrian dialect, Styrian.

In a few days we will let you know what the powder cake conceals.

The ultimate way of generative production

October 6th, 2008 by Hannes

My lovely girlfriend Andrea and I are really excited because our first son Moritz joined us recently on earth. The first two week weren’t really easy, especially because of the lack of sleep. Meanwhile everything is fine again and I can get back to work at FLUID FORMS in a normal manner more or less. The growth of this little new life is such a wonder - for me the ultimate way of generative production.

Many thanks to the Josefidoods for the great survival gift!

The Future of Mass Customization, DIY, Fabbing and Co

October 2nd, 2008 by Andreas

The concepts of co-creation, user/desktop manufacturing and fabbing are buzzing around massively (not only on the Internet) these days. As a matter of fact, there is a lot of praise to find in the articles, blog entries, interviews and comments on these issues. We thought it’s time to put together some positive as well as negative ideas, forecasts and visions about the future of the emerging business we are a very part of:

Co-Creation
A blog post treating the buzzword co-creation. What does it mean?
::

In Crimes to Come
Interesting article written by Dr. Tom Easton  covering some negative impacts (illegal products, intellectual property and fraud) fabbing and similar technologies could have on society and economy.
::

The Design Implications of Mass Customization
An article written by Tim Clayton covering the history and future of mass customization, who coined the term mass customization, different implications of mass customization (post-production-customization, adaptive customization etc), co-design, change in relationship between production and consumption and the emergence of the prosumer (already some years old, but still compelling).
::

MoMoment: MoMo #4 - Joseph Pine II
A Video of a presentation held by well known author Joseph Pine II (1993 he published the award winning book: Mass Customization: The New Frontier in Business Competition) about customer experience, the experience economy and what customers really want ( summed up in his latest book: Authenticity).
::

Stan Davis: The Future of Mass Customization
A short video interview with Stan Davis, the inventor of the term ‘Mass Customization’, talking about the future of mass customization.
::

Configurator Database
Beside Stan Davis’ interview,  more video interviews with Frank Piller (MIT), Joseph Pine (see above), Ryan Chin (MIT), Lukasz Gadowski (Spreadshirt), Christopher Colosi (SecondLife) and others can be found on Configurator Database.
::

Why 21st Century Manufacturers Can’t Ignore Mass Customization
An essay from David J. Gardner. He contrasts mass production with mass customization and describes the transition from mass production to mass customization.
::

Matt Sinclair: The Limits of Consumer Co-Design
Matt Sinclair, researching for his PhD in the UK, discusses the limits of consumer co-design.
::

Trend Map 2008

Detlef Schoder on the future of the newspaper, personalized printing, and how we can get our daily blog feed into the morning paper

Marke Eigenbau. Der Aufstand der Massen gegen die Massenproduktion
A new book showcasing the rise of the economy of individual initiatives using a lot of national (German) and international examples.

Individualized heating for frosty nights

September 29th, 2008 by Sonja

Having caught a nasty cold this weekend and shivering in my “not-yet-heated” appartment, the following thought popped to my mind: Why is it that all radiators have to look so old-fashioned and boring? What about a stylish, custom-made heating that adds style (and not ugliness) to your living room??

Well, in today’s world of mass customization it didn’t take me very long to find one on the internet: the innovative and functional Puzzle radiator from Runtal includes plates to create different looks. According to daily mood and room style, you can replace the plates and create your own individual wall art.

Equipped with such a fun radiator and Fluid Forms’ newest lampshade CASSIUS, I’d be all prepared for those dark and chilly winter nights to come…
